as Vanilla said . I would say too.

but. there are confusing about this sentence.. like what hailey said 'odd' and 'shaky'...

if you write like this '집에 돌아와 보니 저녁 일곱시가 넘어 있었어요.' there isn't no more confusing

'집에 돌아와 보니 저녁 일곱시가 넘었어요.' - this one is happened just very before..

@Vanilla: Hi, I've never heard -었었 doesn't exist in Korean nor have I heard it's grammatically wrong. Could you give some reference?
You may check this out - it's taken from the book, called "한국어의 시제와 상 Korean tenses and image"

To answer the question, 집에 돌아오니 저녁 일곱 시가 넘었었어요 is grammatically shaky and sounds a bit odd because we don't know what you mean by that. -았/었었- is used to say something that had been true in the past and is no longer true at the moment you're speaking.

    For example,
그 때는 널 좋아했었어. (근데 지금은 안 좋아해)
어렸을 때는 파를 싫어했었어. (근데 지금은 좋아해)

Therefore it's a bit awkward to use -었었- in your sentence. "it was past seven o'clock every morning"- this can happen everyday. You should use something like 어제 - "어제 집에 돌아오니 저녁 일곱 시 넘었었어요." or say "집에 돌아오니 저녁 일곱 시 넘어 있었어요.".
    Nihao, Chloe.

집에 돌아오니 저녁 일곱 시가 넘었었어요? is fine. I could say that too.

But if you want to be really correct in grammar,

The verb '~었었다' actually doesn't exist in Korean.
Many Korean people misunderstand that is Korean and use often especially speaking.
But some grammarians insist '었었다' was made by unskilled English translators to translate English tenses that we don't have in Korean.

So 집에 돌아오니 저녁 일곱 시가 넘었어요? is correct.
To make it a little more natural, you could say '돌아오니까' or '돌아왔더니' too.

Hello Vanilla. Thanks for the links. =} I read it all carefully - the first reference is something of hard-shell prescriptivism and purism - which I sort of expected. I'm not much of a prescriptivist nor a purist although I often wonder "What if we do what Icelandic people did to their own language?".

As I mentioned in my answer, I've never heard that -었었- is from English or it's grammatically wrong although I was taught according to 제 6차 교육과정. I found out it' unproven that -었었- is from English, also happen to know there're some debates about -었었- between Korean grammarians. However, the lastest-revised official Korean grammar of 제 7차 교육과정 says -었었- is perfectly correct.

You can hold your opinion and vice versa. But this website is the wrong place to express it. If you want to express it, you can always creat your blog and leave a post about it.

As for the second link, it's a bloger's post - i.e someone's groundless opinion. When you insist that something is right or wrong, you come up with the persuasive reference. But the bloger isn't doing it in the post.

To speak of your sentence again, Chloe. You can say 집에 돌아와 보니 저녁 일곱 시가 넘어 있었어요 like Hoon mentioned. 집에 돌아와 보니 저녁 일곱 시가 넘었어요 is a bit odd(the '넘었어요' part).
Hello Hailey. Thanks for the answer.
Maybe my second answer was misunderstandable. But you could read I didn't 'insist'(that mine is correct.). I had posted my first answer 'believing' that must be right before you answered so I would call it 'a wrong answer' instead of 'an opinion'. And later posted the link to show you as you asked for some reference and just said it's an argument. Anyway thanks for the correction and the advice =D
