Ukrainian culture can't be fully described in encyclopaedias. It's deeply connected with history and tradition - Ukrainians honour their traditions and like to wear traditional clothes - so called vyshyvanki. I advise you to read historical hovels that can say a lot about Ukrainian traditions. I don't know if any Ukrainian writers are translated to English, but there are good novels by Polish writer Henryk Sienkiewicz. You can start with a book called "With Fire and Sword". It's somewhat controversial (as all Ukrainian history). but still very cognitive and interesting.
