The word "Som" :-)

I understand the word "som" means "like" or "as", but I see that it is used so often in Swedish on TV when in English we would never say "like" or "as". Is it said by people in everyday life to mean something like "for example"? If anyone could explain, I'll be very grateful, because it is driving me mad! :-)

Tack för hjälpen! :-)
Adam

There are some situations when the word "som" doesn't mean like/as. For example:

Flickan som står där är min dotter. - That girl who is standing there is my daughter.

Of course that sentence could be constructed without using "som" ("Flickan där är min dotter" would be a shorter version taking away the fact that she is standing). So yeah, it can also mean who/whom/which depending on how it is used.

Hope that clears it up a bit, if not give some example of what you don't understand and I'll help you out.
