To give you a simple answer:

When you say "en" about something, you use "min".
When you say "et" about something, you use "mitt":

    Examples:
A car - en bil. My car - Min bil.
A fish - en fisk. My fish - Min fisk.

A card- et kort. My card - mitt kort.
A child- et barn. My child- mitt barn.

If you don't know when to use "en" and "et" here's an explanation of that: http://www.phrasebase.com/archive/norwegian2/7128.html
