"I am writing to you..." I need some advice about writing a business letter!

If I am writing to my potential employer and I need to say that his friend told me about his company and he is recommending me to him how should I create my first sentence? I need to say something to make him read it till the very end. How to mention his friend, his friend's good attention to me (I used to work for him for some time) and to be polite and not importunate?

"Dear Mr. ******: A mutual friend, Mr. ************ [use first and last names], suggested that I contact you."

Then explain that you're interested in working for his company, and that your friend can verify your character, abilities, etc.
