In Hebrew some of the vowel are shown as letters, but that is not always the case. Basically, Hebrew is wirtten with "Nikud", which is diacritical mark placed above inside or under the letters. However, nowadays Hebrew is witten without this Nikud, and this actually makes it harder for the new learner.
Here you can find a good lesson abour the Nikud:

In Hebrew there are 5 vowels, very simple:
1. a - something like the word "bar"
2. e - something like the word "bed", but a bit longer
3. i - but acually it's more like "ee" in the word "feed"
4. o - like in "top" (more like the british pronunciation)
5. u - but actually something like "oo" in soon
