Are there any grammatical mistakes in this sentence?

Are there any grammatical mistakes in this sentence: 'When they were at last married, the most ideal of situations was found to have been changed to the most practical.' Isn't the 'was' supposed to be 'were' ?

The sentence is perfectly correct

The most ideal (singular) [of situations] was (agree with "the most ideal") found.....

"was" agrees with "the most ideal".
