About Dr. Abram Ring

Salve (Hello) Χαῖρε (Hello) I have had a love of languages ever since I began reading the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trilogy in elementary school; I imitated Tolkein's fictional scripts and languages by inventing some of my own. Computers have been an interest of mine since I was about twelve when I began assembling and disassembling computers and studying programming languages. I started teaching in 1999, and I have always enjoyed helping students access the huge world of classical (Latin and Greek) language and culture. In college and graduate school, I formally studied Latin and ancient Greek, German, and Anglo-Saxon. I have also studied some Italian, French, Old Saxon, Old High German, Hebrew, Sanskrit, and Mandarin among other languages. In addition to human languages, I am familiar with computer languages, QBasic, Assembly Code, OO Pascal, Java, Javascript, and C++ among others, and I have developed a number of computer applications to help people studying Greek and Roman language and culture. My other interests include medieval language and culture and fantasy and sci fi media (books, TV shows, movies). I have been lucky enough to visit Britain and Scotland (giving professional papers at the University of Cambridge and the University of Glasgow) as well as Italy, and I hope to visit Greece next. My B.A. is in Latin, and my M.A. and Ph.D. are in Classics (Greek and Roman language and culture). I offer professional language lessons and a personally designed learning plan for Latin or Ancient (or New Testament) Greek. I will also provide for-pay tutoring for students of Latin and Ancient Greek. Ancient Greek is a written language (speakers speak modern Greek instead), so I teach it in English. I can provide Latin lessons primarily in spoken Latin or partly in Latin and partly in English.
