My inspiration for teaching Spanish has been the satisfaction I have drawn from the progress my husband (British) has made with the language. He recently passed the D.E.L.E. Level C1 having felt at school that he had no ability for languages. Alongside his classes I combined techniques from my own experience learning English in London with tips I got from his teachers to help him outside the classroom. This process showed me how much I enjoyed both teaching and generating interest in my own language. Through this experience I decided that I would become a Spanish teacher. I am enthusiastic about the great benefits of learning Spanish and know what a great advantage good language teachers give to their pupils. I have first-hand experience of the long and dull journey that learning a language can be. However, seeing that people do make it to the end, and seeing that it needn’t be so painful is the greatest lesson I have learnt. Making a language relevant and usable, and focussing on the techniques that students love, not dread, is important and I hope to apply this with all my students. I am from Bogota, which is considered to have a very clear accent. This should aid new learners and also give the more experienced exposure to a Latin American accent. I have a degree in International Business which helps me generate discussion with pupils not just about the amazing culture of, but also the economy and politics of my country and continent. In my previous career as an assistant to the Chief Executive of Ernst and Young in Colombia I was required to work to the highest standards and I do not see why students should expect anything less.
