About Kurt

I started teaching English in Chongqing, China in 2009. I taught at several public middle and elementary schools and also at an English training center. I taught all ages and abilities and I helped many students prepare for the TOEFL and IELTS tests. I enjoyed teaching English so much I decided to come back to America and get my masters degree, which I did, at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Now I teach English composition at two different Universities here in St. Louis and I also substitute teach at an intensive English training center. I love teaching English at all levels, but my specialty is teaching college preparatory English writing (composition) for non-native English speakers. In my spare time I like to ride my bike, work out at the gym, and travel. I’ve also earned an instrument-rated pilot’s license in 2008, so I can help with aviation English as well. I try to convince non-native English speakers that their way of speaking is often not “wrong” or “bad,” it’s just different—which is OK. Most people who speak English all over the world are not native English speakers, and there is nothing wrong with speaking or writing English that is different from native English, as long as we can understand each other . Lastly, I always tell my students, that the more they like my class—or at least the more they are “into it,” the more they will learn. I find students benefit from a healthy amount of gentle persuasion and approachability and I love showing people that learning English can be fun. I always say, the more you like learning English, the more you will learn!
