About Helene

Wanna speak French? Let’s talk!

Hello there! I’m a multilingual, globetrotting language teacher. Teaching online is my full-time occupation, and I love that it allows me to talk to so many interesting people around the world!

I’ve been teaching French and English for 15 years. I specialize in oral communication skills, as conversational practice is the best way to become fluent in a new language. I also strongly agree with Dr. Krashen that “comprehensible input” (i.e. lots of reading and listening) is essential for language acquisition.

I’ve worked hard over my first few months on italki to adapt my approach to an online learning environment. If necessary, I provide my students with tons of useful resources that they can use to learn on their own. We then use our time together to fine-tune and practice language skills. For this reason, I strongly prefer self-directed learners who know what they want to learn.

Here’s what I do:

– I provide a safe and comfortable environment for you to practice your speaking skills and build confidence;
– I correct your errors as much or as little as you want. I give instant or delayed feedback, either verbally or in writing, depending on your preferences;
– I identify for you the main points you need to work on to improve your pronunciation, then provide tools to help you accomplish that;
– I explain in simple, practical terms the confusing grammar points;
– I explain why casual French sounds so fast, and what you can do to understand it better;
– I recommend ways to practice your reading and listening skills;
– I adapt to your requirements: it’s your lesson, you decide what works for you!

And here’s what I don’t do:

– Test preparation;
– Absolute beginner classes (unless you're highly motivated and independant);
– Highly structured programs and lesson plans.

Feel free to contact me and set up a trial session!
