About Mike

Hi everybody! I am a 48-year old Canadian teacher of English. I have been teaching in Japan for the past 22 years (a VERY long time, right!!). Japan is an easy country to live in, and the food is great! But recently, I've felt I want to try to teach a wider range of people, so I joined iTalki. Nice to meet you! My first love was science, and I have a BSC. in Biology (Medical Genetics). But I discovered a love of languages during a trip to Europe, so I moved to Italy and did a Magister Linguae in Italian. After that, I moved to Japan and began teaching. I got a Masters Degree in Education with a specialty in TESOL from a university in Australia. Since then I have written four conversation textbooks that are used at universities around Japan. So what can I teach you? Well, my specialties are teaching natural communication, and also grammar. I know, many people hate studying grammar, but I quite love it. I think it can help people express themselves clearly. But it is important to know the difference between "textbook grammar, typically used in formal writing, and "functional grammar," which is used more in conversation, chat, blog writing, and so on. I can help you with all of this. I can also help people looking to improve their pronunciation. This is most useful for people such as call-center agents and so on. In any case, contact me and see if I can help you with what you need to improve upon! LANGUAGE ABILITY English (Native Speaker) Japanese (Advanced speaking & reading) Italian (Lower Advanced) French (Lower Intermediate) Thai (Upper Beginner) German (Upper Beginner)
