Learning grammar and improving your pronunciation, etc. is very important when learning a language, BUT it's also important to have fun with it!

I'm going to share with you some jokes, idioms, and a famous quote to get you laughing and to start your week off enjoyably.

Idioms

1. Never look a gift horse in the mouth

If someone gave you a free car, would you be annoyed if it were old? Well, this idiom tells you, “Don't be annoyed. Be grateful for the gift!” If you look at a horse's teeth, you can tell its age. That's why we say, “Don't look at the horse's mouth.” Even if it is a very old horse, a free horse is better than no horse!

2. People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones

This means that you should do things well yourself and have a clean conscience before criticizing other people. For example, if you complain that your neighbor leaves their trash out and it stinks, but you often play music that is way too loud, someone can say to you, “People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones!”

3. Every cloud has a silver lining

This idiom is for anyone having a bad day today! We say that “Every cloud has a silver lining” to tell you that even when bad things happen, there is always something good that will come from it.

Cloud = rain cloud = bad. Silver lining = ray of sunshine = good!

4. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

Ah…one of my favorites. This is such a lovely saying. It means that everybody has a different idea of beauty. There is no one true beauty. There are many, many kinds of beauty. Even if you find no beauty in something (abstract artwork? the McDonald's logo?) somebody else might!

5. Nothing is certain but death and taxes

Good advice to end on. This quote comes from Benjamin Franklin, an American historical figure. It was so popular that it has now become a common phrase.

Jokes

A: Because it had too many problems.
  2. Q: Why did the man take off his doorbell?
A: Because he wanted to win the No Bell Prize.
    • Hint: The Nobel Prize is a famous prize worldwide!
  3. Q: Why did the toilet paper roll down the hill?
A: Because it wanted to get to the bottom.
