The German exams offered by the Goethe-Institut correspond to the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and range from level A1 for beginners to C2 for the most advanced language learners.

 

Who can take the tests?

 

The exams of the Goethe-Institut are available to anyone interested, regardless of the exam candidate’s citizenship. They are designed to demonstrate knowledge of German as a second language and/or as a foreign language.

 

Exam List

 

There’re in total 6 exams, one for each level. The A1-B2 exams can be taken both by young people and adults, and the C1-C2 exams can be only taken by adults. When you pass any exam, you will receive an official and internationally recognized certificate.

A1

GOETHE-ZERTIFIKAT A1: FIT IN DEUTSCH 1

·      For children and young people between 10 and 16 years of age

·      Demonstrates that you have a very basic knowledge of German

·      Proof that you have successfully reached A1 level

GOETHE-ZERTIFIKAT A1: START DEUTSCH 1

·      A German exam for adults

·      You can apply for a position as an au pair in Germany

·      Is evidence that you have the language skills required to be granted a visa to join your husband or wife in Germany

·      Proof that you have successfully reached A1 level

A2

GOETHE-ZERTIFIKAT A2: FIT IN DEUTSCH

·      A German exam designed for young people between the ages of 12 and 16

·      Demonstrates that you have a basic knowledge of German

·      Proof that you have successfully reached A2 level

GOETHE-ZERTIFIKAT A2

·      A German exam for adults

·      Demonstrates that you have a basic knowledge of German

·      Proof that you have successfully reached A2 level

B1

GOETHE-ZERTIFIKAT B1

·      A German exam for young people and adults

·      Qualifies you to attend a preparatory course (Studienkolleg) to qualify for admission to university in Germany

·      Allows you to live and work in Germany

·      Proof that you have successfully reached B1 level

B2

GOETHE-ZERTIFIKAT B2

·      A German exam for young people and adults

·      Prepares you to study at a university or institution of higher education in Germany

·      Is evidence of your advanced German skills for a job application

·      Prepares you to work in the medical field in Germany

·      Is evidence that you have successfully passed B2 level

C1

GOETHE-ZERTIFIKAT C1

·      A German exam for adults

·      Prepares you to study at a university or institution of higher education in Germany

·      Demonstrates very advanced knowledge of German for employment purposes

·      Prepares you to work in the medical sector

·      Proof that you have successfully reached C1 level

C2

GOETHE-ZERTIFIKAT C2: GROßES DEUTSCHES SPRACHDIPLOM(GDS)

·      A German exam for adults

·      Prepares you to study or conduct research in Germany

·      Fulfills the language requirement to teach at a school in Germany

·      Proof that you have successfully reached level C2

·      Be issued with an official and internationally recognized certificate

 

Goethe Test Structure & Scoring System

 

In general, the Goethe Test is comprised of the following 2 categories, the time for different parts may vary depends on the different levels of exams.

 

 

Total points: 100 points

Passing points: At least 60 points (60% of the maximum number of points) have been achieved and 2 categories of the examination have been passed.

 

How to Take the Test

You can sit the exam in Germany, at one of the Goethe-Instituts located around the world, or with an exam partner situated in your area. Please contact the exam center of your choice directly to enquire about available dates and prices.
