How To Say 'I Need Something' In Russian

I think that the most important thing, when you are in a foreign country, is to be able to say, “I need something.” For example, “I need help” or “I need some water” or “I need a taxi.” You can not possibly walk around without knowing how to say that in Russian. It is not complicated at all, so let us have a look at this very important grammar point.

НУЖНО is need in Russian. But in English you say, “I need some coffee” or “We need a ride” or “He needs to study.” Even though I in English is Я in Russian, and You is Ты, and He is Он, we do not use those personal pronoun with нужно. We use the indirect personal pronoun.

So, in order to say “I need to do something” in Russian, we need to use these indirect personal pronouns and add a verb in the infinitive form.

НУЖНО with verbs

For Example:

1. Мне (нужно) работать сегодня. (I need to work today).
2. Ему не (нужно) делать домашнее задание. (He does not need to do his homework).
3. Тебе (нужно) бросить курить. (You need to quit smoking).
4. Ей (нужно) принять душ. (She needs to take a shower).
5. Вам (нужно) позвонить родителям. (You need to call your parents).  

Now let us see how we use НУЖНО in past tense.

Examples:

1. Вчера мне (нужно было) сдавать экзамен. (I needed to take a test yesterday).
2. В прошлом году ему (нужно было) ехать в Москву. (He needed to go to Moscow last year).
3. На прошлой неделе вам (нужно было) написать доклад. (Last week you needed to write these papers).
4. Тебе (нужно было) выучить слова. (You needed to memorize these worlds).
5. Им не (нужно было) это делать. (They did not need to do that).

Next, let us see how we use НУЖНО in future tense.

Examples:

1. Мне (нужно будет) позвонить ему. (I will need to call him).
2. Ему не нужно будет готовить ужин. (He will not need to make dinner).
3. Вам (нужно будет) идти в консульство. (You will not need to go to the Embassy).
4. Тебе не (нужно будет) работать там. (You will not need to work).
5. Нам (нужно будет) постирать вещи. (We will need to do the laundry).

2. Ему нужно каждый день чистить зубы и умываться? (Does he need to brush his teeth and wash his face every day?)
3. Ей нужно было каждый день принимать душ? (Did she need to take a shower every day?)
4. Нам нужно будет каждый день ходить в школу? (Will we need to go to school every day?)
5. Тебе нужно каждый день ходить на работу? (Do you need to go to work every day?)
6. Вам нужно было  слушать классическую музыку? (Did you need to listen to classic music?)
7. Им нужно будет  каждый день учить русский язык? (Will they need to study Russian every day?)
8. Тебе нужно было  купить  хлеб и молоко? (Did you need to buy some bread and milk?)
9. Ей нужно каждую неделю ходить в спортзал? (Does he need to go to the gym every week?)
10. Ему нужно всегда много есть? (Does he always need to eat a lot?)

НУЖНО with nouns

The tricky part in using НУЖНО with nouns is that you need to remember that there are three genders in Russian language: masculine, feminine and neutral. Let us have a look at them.

For example, to say that you need a table, you should use НУЖЕН because стол (table) is masculine.  

Examples:

1. Мне (нужен) этот компьютер для работы. (I need this computer for work).  
2. Ей (нужен) этот стул. (She needs this chair).
3. Нам (нужен) тот диван. (We need that couch).
4. Вам (нужен) англо-русский словарь. (You need English-Russian dictionary).  
5. Ему (нужен) апельсиновый сок. (He needs some orange juice).

If you want to use a feminine noun like книга (book), you should use НУЖНА.

Examples:

1. Мне (нужна) тетрадь. (I need a notebook).
2. Ему (нужна) помощь. (He needs help).
3. Нам (нужна) переводчица китайского языка. (We need a Chinese translator).  
4. Вам (нужна) срочная операция. (You need urgent surgery).  
5. Тебе (нужна) девушка. (You need a girlfriend).

If the noun is a neutral gender you need to use НУЖНО.

Examples:

1. Я так хочу спать, мне (нужно) кофе. (I need some coffee because I am very sleepy).
2. Им (нужно) имя этого студента. (They need (to know) the name of this student).
3. Тебе (нужно) длинное пальто на зиму. (You need a long winter coat).
4. Вам (нужно) радио. (You need a radio).
5. Ему (нужно) яблоко. (He needs an apple).

If your noun is plural, it does not matter what gender it is you need to use НУЖНЫ.

Examples:

1. Нам (нужны) ваши мнения. (We need your opinion).
2. Вам (нужны) хорошие книги по грамматике. (You need good grammar books).
3. Мне (нужны) эти диски. (I need these CDs).
4. Ему (нужны) друзья. (He needs friends).
5. Ей (нужны) фрукты. (She needs some fruit).
