The history of 19th century's southern Italy and the hardships of the local farmers' life after the Unification of Italy have been well portrayed by an Italian movie I watched a few years ago, "Noi credevamo" ("We used to believe"). Through the lives of three fictional patriots from Cilento (Campania), Salvatore, Domenico and Angelo, the movie tells the major events leading to the fall of the former Borbones' kingdom and the extension of the future Italian monarchs', the Savoias', authority over southern Italian regions. "Noi credevamo" does an excellent job stressing how abrupt such a change of government was for southern Italy, and how much of a harm did the Italian Unification bring to these regions, at least in the short term. These milestone events may have shaped today's southern Italy, perhaps for the worse. I think they are a key point of our history, and that is why I wrote about this movie. Did the ideals of national unity become mere delusions for the patriots who made them a reality? This is the question that "Noi credevamo" tries to answer.
