Pronunciation patterns When it comes to the sounds of a lot of languages you have to learn some patterns in order to overcome the struggle of not knowing exactly how some vowels are pronounced. For instance, in Brazilian Portuguese, it’s common that learners get confused about the pronunciation of the vowel sounds [e] and [ɛ] in some words. You can observe one of these patterns in the word “Vermelho” which means ‘Red’. “Vermelho”. In Brazilian Portuguese, every time you find the combination ELH in a word, the ‘E’ needs to be pronounced [e]. The only exceptions are the words ‘velho’, ‘evangelho’ & ‘groselha’. So, now you know about this pattern and I’m a 100% sure you won’t find this kind of info in your regular textbook. The more patterns you learn, the better your pronunciation ability becomes. See you.
