Cultural Misunderstanding and Streotypes

This week, I have read a book of “Stereotypes in Our Culture” by John T. Jost and David L. Hamilton. Then, these questions came to my mind.

-Can we say that a stereotype is a cultural misunderstanding?
-Can a stereotype have positive aspects?

Looking forward your discussions and comments. Thank you.

I don't see why a stereotype should not be positive, or why it should be considered a misunderstanding.

Does it not depend on how it is interpreted ?

Is not a stereotype per se neutral; the criterion for making judgements of a moral dimension is the way it is applied to define, affect or resolve a situation ?

Aaegis: you remark is somehow right. I don’t have a clear idea about a stereotype. The overall picture that I have about it is that a stereotype is a term used to define all people of a certain belief into a mostly negative category that may only reflect a selected few of the racial demographics. It is also related to generalizations. Now , I want to know an answer to this question: Can we say that a stereotype is a cultural misunderstanding? I hope that this question make sense, and if I am wrong, correct me.

A stereotype is a generalization.

It isn't necessarily a misunderstanding.

It doesn't have to be negative.

It doesn't have to be cultural.

It doesn't have to come from ignorance.

Perhaps you could describe a cultural stereotype as a simplification. Whenever we talk about culture and social phenomena, we have to generalise. Obviously, in certain contexts, a stereotype can be offensive or insensitive. There can be fine line between a stereotype and a caricature.

@Joy - You clearly don't understand what a stereotype is, so your questions don't make sense. You'd be better off using the actual definition of stereotype, rather than giving us your opinion, asking if it's correct, then telling us we're wrong.
