Does Welfare Encourage Laziness?

Camito, I think it depends on what type of wellfare we're talking about and what the purpose is.  I think that laziness could be a small side effect of general wellfare, but the benefits probably outweigh this side effect.

 

One very clever way we have wellfare in the United States is through the tax code.  The Earned Income Tax Credit is a dollar-for-dollar rebate given to people with low income.  Even if they pay no tax, they receive money from the government.  This act of putting a wellfare program into the tax code is very effective because of a few reasons.  One is that it's anonymous.  No one sees you standing in a wellfare line or cashing a check.  You're just getting a tax return.

 

The second reason is while most people are heavily against wellfare, almost everyone is heavily in favor of tax credits for low income people.  These are exactly the same thing, but the reception is polar opposite depending on how you ask the question.  It's still a spending program designed to help low income individuals.
