How are Asians treated in Russia?

Hi guys,

I can't write in Russian yet so I have to ask this question in English. The reason why I'm asking is because I'm kind of interested in the Cyrillic alphabet and once I start learning the language, I would have to travel to Russia one day (sooner or later). There's no point not interacting with the locals in their own language, right?

The problem is, I have heard of some rather nasty reports of Asians getting beaten up in Russia simply for being Asian! I don't want to generalise or stereotype but I do need to get some opinion from people here (preferably Asians who have been to Russia and most ideally, native Russians themselves).

It's actually a toss-up between Russian and Greek for me at the moment as I like the orthography of both these languages. Thanks and looking forward to your discussions here.

Note: I can't choose 'Russian' in the drop-down list for 'This discussion is for learning..."It's got be parked in 'English' for now.

Moderators, would you be so kind to help me relocate it. Thank you.

I live in Moscow and can't confirm that. My son says that there many Asian students at the University he studies. There are 2 Vietnamese girls in his group and they are hard workers and very successful. And thay have no problem with treatment. Of course the are some Asian gangs in Russia but it is another story. So, Asian people live in Russia as all Russian people do.
