I'm studying to learn a totally new language-I totally don't know where to start with, anyone any suggestions?

I am going to South Korea for six months.  Since I totally have no idea about the Korean languge before, I guess life will be more convenient if I can speak a little Korean.  Just a little, since most people in my program can speak English.  I have a South Korean classmate who can be my language partner and she is coming the coffee bar that I am now in in one hour- I exchange econometrix teaching for Korean learning.  The thing is, I totally have no idea where to start with to learn a totally new language for travel purpose.  Does anyone who has the similar experiences of learning a compelete new language have any suggestions?

Hi, Shirleen.

I have ever tried to learn Korean by self. Finally, I learned the Korean alphabet in 2-3 hours. You can look at this video and the websites.

It will show you the rudiments, "Consonants: ㄱ,ㄴ,ㅁ,ㄷ,ㅇVowels: ㅣ,ㅗ,ㅜ,ㅏ", then "Consonants: ㅅ,ㅂ,ㅈ,ㄹVowels: ㅓ,ㅐ,ㅔ,ㅡ", just like 'b,p,m,f,d,t etc.' and Vowels 'a,e,i,o,u'.

After you have learned the alphabet, you can proceed to learn the common Korean words and phrases.

I think one way you could organize your learning would be to divide it into real life situations, like going grocery shopping, meeting new people, eating at a restaurant, or asking for directions. For each topic, you (or your teacher) could come up with a list of words and phrases that would really help you in each situation, and really practice the pronunciation with them until they feel easy to say. This way of learning won't always help you if you want to be able to carry on a conversation, but you'll at least know a bunch of useful phrases, and you'll also be able to recognize many words as you go about your day.

Good luck in Korea! :)

Buy a Korean primer for travellers/visitors and ask your Korean partner to go through the entire book with you.
