P.S. When you call a customer service telephone numbers for just about any business that does business nationally in the U.S., the second thing you hear, after the company name, is "marca dos para español."

The United States has no official language.

Anti-immigration groups have from time to time mounted campaigns to make English the official language of the United States, a lobbying group named "U. S. English" has tried, Congress has debated the topic and introduced bills, but none have ever become law.

Individual states have their own laws. 30 states have passed laws making English the official language of the state. As a practical matter, it doesn't mean much.

You can say that English is the de facto official language in the sense that there isn't any state in which any other language is official There are no Francophone states in the United States, for example. With regard to signs, ballots, tax forms, official documents and so forth, every state acts pragmatically depending on the local population and political forces.

Spanish is by far the second-most-common language spoken in the United States. In fact, there are more Spanish speakers in the United States than there are in Spain.

In three states--California, Texas, and Florida--about 40% of the population speaks Spanish. I live in a state that does not have a very large Spanish-speaking population. Nevertheless, it is very common to see public notices in both English and Spanish, and food labels in supermarkets are often both English and Spanish.

Here in algeria,

The first language in arabic, the second language is french and the third is english.

But sometimes I think that french is more important than arabic here bcoz it's the most spoken, even in our algerian dialect we use more french words than arabic.

Still, arabic is the official language but if somone doesn't know french it'll hard for them to get by here.
