Since you mention Orwell... of course I love <em>Nineteen Eighty-Four</em> and <em>Animal Farm</em>, but I will add that <em>A Clergyman's Daughter</em> and <em>Burmese Days</em> are excellent.

And I cannot speak too highly of his essays--you can find a collection of fifty of them online at no cost at Project Gutenberg Australia at

They are beautiful examples of clean, clear, English prose.

I also love "1984" by George Orwell :D
