"The Iron Curtain." The phrase was coined by British premier Winston Churchill at the end of World War II. It meant the boundary in Europe between the Warsaw Pact countries to the East, mostly Communist and under the influence of the Soviet Union, and the NATO countries to the West, democracies friendly to the United States. In the U.S. the Warsaw Pact countries were said to be "behind the iron curtain." Sometimes they were referred to as "the Iron Curtain countries."

"A shooting iron"--a gun, probably a rifle.

"Pumping iron"--bodybuilding to develop the musculature

"Big iron"--a large, traditional mainframe computer, probably made by IBM

"In irons"--a sailboat turned at an angle such that the sail does not catch the wind but flaps uselessly, and the ship is not moving fast enough to steer and thus cannot turn to a better angle.

"Irons"--golf clubs, intermediate between "putters" and "woods."

I can see "iorn bladder" as I knew someone that has a hard time using public restrooms or bathrooms so they told me they held it in for like a 20 hour car ride so I would consider the use for that person. 

Not that I hear it a lot but I sometimes refer to "iorn imune system" where they don't get sick easily. Some get sick very easily and others don't.

David, I assume 'iron bladder' is not dirty, or is it? I hope it isn't, thoug bladder... does seem to be... Does it suggest someone who can hold their urine for long?

We have the phrases "to rule with an iron fist" (be a dictator), and "an iron fist in a velvet glove" (the nature of a benevolent dictator).

If you can eat anything, especially spicy food, you have "a cast-iron stomach". We also use "an iron bladder", but I'll let you work that one out. ;)
