Dan Smith
Another easy (?) song for English listening practice

Learners, I'd appreciate comments on how difficult or easy you think this song is, for listening, particularly if you find it difficult.

"Smile," music by Charlie Chaplin

Sung by Nat King Cole... slowly and with good diction.

Charlie Chaplin was the great comedian of the silent movie era who portrayed "the little tramp." The music appeared in his (<em>great</em> and <em>very</em> funny) movie, <em>Modern Times</em>. The title and lyrics were added by Geoffrey Parsons.

Smile though your heart is aching;
Smile even though it's breaking.
When there are clouds in the sky
You'll get by.

If you smile through your fear and sorrow,
Smile, and maybe tomorrow,
You'll see the sun come shining through
For you.

Light up your face with gladness,
Hide every trace of sadness,
Although a tear

May be ever so near;

That's the time you must keep on trying!
Smile! What's the use of crying?
You'll find that life is still worthwhile--
If you just smile.
