I should add that I read Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park: The Lost World (both by Michael Crichton) within the past year and they are very good, and relatively short.

As far as works of American literature written in English go, the most celebrated fiction writers are probably Mark Twain (for funny/silly/American stories), Edgar Allen Poe (for macabre/horror), Ernest Hemingway (drama), and F. Scott Fitzgerald (drama). To Kill a Mockingbird is another "classic" American novel written by Harper Lee--and was her only novel published up until very recently. 

Isaac Asimov and Michael Crichton are some among the most celebrated science fiction novelists from the USA.

Personally, I don't read a lot of fiction, but these are authors I would recommend.
