Wanting to learn Japanese!

I want to learn to be fluent in speaking Japanese, but i honestly don't know where to begin! I guess learning the Hiragana and Katakana would be the first step, and then maybe learn some vocabulary words. If anyone has any tips for me to begin my learning process, that would be great!

I'm also available to anyone who wants to practice their English,

Thanks for reading!

If you have not a teacher, use a book. You can try with Minna no Nihongo or Genki.

Hiragana and katakana should be your first step. Make sure you know all of the sounds, knowing how to write all of the characters is not required, but is very useful. I recommend learning 5 characters every 3 days and review all of the characters you've learned so far everyday. You can adjust the learning pace by how much time you want to spend on language study.

Next, Kanji and studying basic grammar should the next step. Learning kanji is a slow process which typically takes years, but as you learn how to make sentences, you get a chance to use kanji you learn as you make sentences, which allows you to practice two skills at once. And learning kanji early, allows you to start reading faster and make learning vocabulary easier. There are reading materials with minimal kanji, almost all hiragana, like children's stories.

Thank you everyone for your input, this helped me out a lot!

Ariana, your advice was extremely helpful and I really appreciate the time you took to write out all those steps for me. It makes learning this language much easier now that I know where to start. Thank you so much for answering my question!

Aficionado, I have heard of Genki and I think I will be giving it a try, thank you.
