Ash Wednesday

Hi Everyone

I´m Teacher Joseph.

Today in the English speaking world there is a celebration called "Ash wednesday". I have made a videoclip to explain what it is. I have around 85 videoclips on my site to help you with your English. They are all free.

You can see my videoclip about Ash Wednesday here.  www.dailymotion.com/englishwithjoseph

Ash Wednesday has nothing to do with coming from the English speaking world or not - it is a Christian holiday or season, so Catholics all around the world whatever language they speak are celebrating it.

The Christian season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday.

The date of Ash Wednesday varies each year according to the date of Easter. It is always six-and-a-half weeks before Easter. The earliest possible date of Ash Wednesday is 4 February and the latest possible date is 10 March.

When is Ash Wednesday?
In 2017 Ash Wednesday will be on 1 March

Childhood Memory in England
I remember putting an ash twig down my sock on Ash Wednesday. This was to keep me safe, as anyone who did not have an ash twig could have their foot stamped on.

In Poland I remember Ash Wednesday as a very sad church celebration. They will put some ash on your head, which was something different. Remember about dying at the end. Not a happy thought. Also my family use to fast that day, strick fast they call it.
