If you were making and selling clothes on the internet could you see this quote being helpful if some people unfairly criticized your style or sense of color? Would you be tempted to try to market your work by trying to please everyone, by trying to justify everything you do? I believe that some people are like that.
I would like to write more about the second point in my original post to see if anyone would like to respond. "It helps to find out what each person's situation is to help them to learn." I wish to learn to speak Japanese. Here is some background for that desire. Someone I know is 96 years old. His health is poor. He speaks mostly Japanese and not much English. I speak English and not very much Japanese. About 5 years ago this man's wife died. He has been sad and lonely ever since. Recently he expressed the desire to kill himself. I asked myself if there was anything I could do to help him. I came up with the idea to ask him to help me learn to speak Japanese. I have always wanted to learn Japanese, the language of my ancestors. However, I have been unwilling to commit the time and effort to do so until now. I have visited him once now, and he was pretty depressed and didn't care to talk with me at all. I brought a Japanese movie to watch with him, but I ended up watching it by myself. Not a great start. I will try again later this month. For now, I am enjoying learning Japanese on my own.
Does anyone else have a little story to tell about why they wish to learn a foreign language?
SHL - I have been on italki for only a few days. I am trying to get a feel for how things work. Thank you for your advice. I am in the process of spending three months or so learning some Japanese vocabulary and some simple phrases before trying to exchange English for Japanese conversations with someone. In the meantime, I thought I could be of some use by playing around with some discussions in my native language (English). Alles Gute.
