I don’t think this site attracts „bad students.“ Why would a bad student pay for language instruction over Skype? Bad students are those forced, for whatever reason, to take a class they don’t want and struggle through it. I’m sure all the students here want to learn whatever language they are learning, otherwise they wouldn’t be here. While I’ve not encountered any I’d call „bad“, there could be teachers here who overstate their qualifications (they’re a native speaker so they think they automatically can teach their native language, which isn’t true. Or, they’re non-natives overstating their abilities.) Again, I’ve not experienced this, but it’s far more likely to be the problem than a „bad student“ showing up. You just have to find someone you like and can work with and stick with that person. Personality is about 90% of it in my experience (of the teacher).

That is a matter of efficiency in regard with the selection of teacher, which significantly shows how much you may get from the paid time and effort. Primarily, if you are just a beginner in language learning, you probably have to go to traditional language schools acquire essential learning skills over language learning. but if you have achieved beyond B1 or B2 level of a language, you probably may choose some other better and money-saving method to enhance your language skills.

Qualification is another story. It is important but not a necessity to enhance your learning as long as you know how to improve your proficiency in a language.

Frankly, It depends on what you are looking for. In my personal situation, I have found different tutors/teachers with different methodologies to help me with my English skills. They have helped me with my pronunciation, rules grammar and also my speaking skills. But being honest, the most important thing/task is to be "a good student". I mean, we need to continue studying English for ourselves even if we don't have time/money to schedule a lesson on Italki :)

I’ve had good experiences with using community tutors just for chat, since I already know the language, but I do have reservations about whether one can learn a foreign language from scratch using even a professional teacher on an online website. I personally would have more confidence in a traditional classroom environment where you have teachers and other students to converse with. But, using tutors or professional teachers here would be a great supplement to a traditional classroom environment.
