It's difficult to schedule speaking sessions because of busy lifestyles and time differences. I can do texting while I do other things like cooking but for speaking I'd have to find a quiet time to do that. As I'm married with three kids and busy with my job, I don't really have time for that. A compromise is sending voice messages. This way one can practice speaking but it's still more flexible than having to schedule a time and sit down to talk. 

Not sure about others but speaking is a better option. 

Both are important. But of course your choice depends on your goal.

I prefer speaking for most things because it is quicker.
