what is the difference between brush up and brush up on ?

I want to brush up on my writing skills ?
i need more examples ,plz

"Brush up on" is the correct phrase, as in "I need to brush up on my German, as I haven't spoken it in years."
"Brush up" by itself would be incomplete.
