Why don't you have an unique name?

I stumbled upon this line while searching something: "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet" is a popular reference to William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet, in which Juliet seems to argue that it does not matter that Romeo is from her family's rival house of Montague, that is, that he is named "Montague".

I think my context for this topic is a bit different than what Juliet said. She said, "what's in a name?" which means a name possesses less value and one should not be bothered much about it.(Am I right?) So, is that why people give their baby a name which is more frequently used? Is that why they don't spend much time to come up with a unique name?

I came across this site where the most frequent names around the world have been listed. http://www.bounty.com/pregnancy-and-birth/baby-names/top-baby-names/the-most-popular-baby-names-around-the-world;

What do you think about this subject? Should parents give their baby a new(or unique) name or should iterate the same name again and again? I know I will get a comment from Mohammed!:D

Wish you all have an pleasant day!:)

I think it's not good if the name is too unique. If people have trouble spelling the name, always mispronounce the name, don't know if it's a boy or girl, have weird associations with the name, make fun of the name, it's hardly a pleasant experience. Parents take a lot of time to think of the perfect name for their baby but if they choose something really unique, more often than not, it'll backfire. There is a German website where they make fun of "unique" names: https://chantalismus.tumblr.com/;.

I once had a Chinese student whose name was so rare that it actually can't be printed by many computers. Whenever she needed an airplane ticket, she had to prove that it was her. Her parents dug out a very rare and outdated Chinese character for her name that doesn't exist in unicode. Of course, nobody knows how to write her name by hand either...

My combination of my first name, middle name and last name is unique in the world though. The names individually are normal, even though my middle name is a bit rare. I'm annoyed that even though Miriam is a very common international name, people still like to mispell it (especially here on italki) like Myriam, Maryam, Marjam, Mirjam, Mairim or whatever and Germans can't pronounce my middle name properly. But I do like the fact that I'm the only person in the world who has these three names combined.

After entering to the world of internet, social media and platforms like italki I found out that people specially westerners spell my name very differently that what actually it is and mostly they have difficulty spelling it. Sometime especially in Chinese and Korean culture I feel their name sound like alphabet to me not name. I think my name will sound to them as weird as theirs to me. So in a connected world of today which people from all around the world gather together to talk about and share ideas (like this platform) I should change my view of what vocabulary or sound suits to be a name or not. I should change my mind about what even weird or unique can mean in naming a person!!

I like weird names and if I ever decided to have a child I would give them a unique name I think. Others might think it's strange but as long as I like it (and hopefully the kid likes it), it's a good name.

Naming babies and names’ meaning are always debated by Arab people because we choose names with meanings so they must carry a good meaning. I tend to ask anyone from my friends on Italki about the meaning of their names but not all nations choose meaningful names. In my community they say the person sweetens his/her name even if it is not very good name.

You discuss nice topics @Troglodyte, can you tell us your real name? Where are you Mohamed come and comment please,lol.

QM, Miriam, Sarah and seand645

Thank you so much all of your for your contribution.:)

QM, I agree with you and your assertions are quite convincing:) I like your name, QuestionMark. That's pretty unique:D

Miriam, thank you for sharing your experience. Now I think being unique is not a good option always:)

Sara, lol. Say Hi to Timmy:)

seand, Yes, you are right. Unique or a bit different sounding names are often ridiculed by others in school. Thanks for the song, I will take a look at it.
