Fake profiles I have had messages from 3 fake profiles in the last 2 days. Is this happening to anyone else? It was not so common in the past on this platform. What is going on? Are we too famous?

Yes. I recently received two messages from two different people wanting to talk...but when I checked their profiles they had been removed, this was about an hour after they had sent the message because I was in class. Usually, I wait for a bit because profiles can accidentally get removed or deactivated. Sometimes, you can tell by searching their image, if it's a stock photo etc. chances are it's a fake profile.

I’m not accepting private messages at the moment because I get 1-2 messages by scammers plus 5 messages by people wanting to talk in English (I’m not interested in that) per day and it’s just annoying. But this week I spotted two scammers who took part in discussions and reported them. They often have generic American names, stolen pictures and don’t write like Americans at all.

I receive a message from scammer too.

It was discussion that scammers tried to steal teachers credentials.

Just know that italki don't send messages as users do. And never click any link from unknown person.

You are right Casey one of them did have a stock photo and another had a ridiculous fake name. It is very bothersome.

@Estefania

Other users can’t send you private messages because currently your contact permissions are set to “friends only”. That’s why you don’t receive scam. If you notice that Spanish teachers who claim to be native speakers, obviously aren’t native, you can report them to italki.

@Joshua

That’s weird that you get less messages. You’re a native English speaker. You should be flooded with unsolicited messages. Maybe you’re not so active in the forum and thus less visible? Or the majority of scammers target women?
