Hi Alessandra!
The meaning is pretty much the same :) The construction with "was" is more colloquial.

You can also say "she would be sad if she heard that".

One thing to pay attention to when using the "if she were/was to" construction is whether you have a verb or not. If you have a verb, you need a "to" after the were/was. If you have a noun or an adjective, the way you wrote it would be fine. Here are two examples:
Verb: if she were to hear that, she would be sad.
Adjective/noun: if she were rich/if she were a rich woman, she would be very happy.

Hope this didn't confuse you!

If she hears that she will be sad (condition one)
=When she
hears that she will be sad
condition one expresses possibility
If she hears that she is supposed to be sad

If she heard that she would be sad(condition two)
=She didn't hear so she didn't get sad
condition two expresses hope , wish or something didn't happen

If she had heard that she would have been sad
(condition three)
Condition three expresses impossibility

If you heat water it boils (condition zero )
condition zero expresses facts

Thanks! About the correct sentences, could you explain to me the differences? I mean, why can we use both would and were/was? Is there the same meaning?
