You know, to an American, saying that you want to speak like a "native American" does not mean exactly what you think it means. To Americans, the only real NATIVE Americans are the race of people we also sometimes call American Indians. This can be confusing because they are not related to people from India at all. But when Christopher Columbus first landed on North America, he thought he had found a new way to get to India. So he called the native people he found here "Indians". Sadly, America has done many bad things to the true Native Americans. It's a shameful part of American history.

Anyway, I simply wanted to let you know that, although I am an American, (and I was born in the US,) I would not say that I am a Native American. (In fact, I am a native of the US. So you are not wrong. But now we use that expression to refer to the original native peoples of America.)
