Today is a holiday in the United States. It is called Mother's Day. It seems like several other countries are celebrating Mother's Day today as well; for instance, one of my friends from China said she bought herself, her mother-in-law, and her daughter flowers today for Mother's Day. I guess I always assumed it was a US thing, but, when I checked out the Wikipedia article this morning, it is in fact celebrated all over the world. Go me for being a dumb American. Hehehehe. :) But, hey, at least I learned something new today and am more knowledgable about the world around me for it. That is NEVER a bad thing!
Anyhow, this morning, I visited my mother and brought her a bouquet of flowers that I bought at one of the nearby florists. I also gave her $80 USD to go spend on whatever she wants. I typically give her cash because it is hard to find something that she wants. Plus, this way, she can go out and spend it on whatever and doesn't need to return something that I got her if she isn't a big fan of it. Hehehehe.
Buying flowers for your mom, sister, niece, or anyone who is a mother is typical in American culture on this day. Some people also buy chocolates for their moms, take them out to dinner or breakfast, and even buy them a Mother's Day cake. My sister bought the cake this year, so I didn't.
A number of restraurants have Mother's Day specials or even give away free meals for moms on this day. In fact, a local farm stand that makes their own ice cream put up a sign saying that ice cream cones were free for mothers today. Of course, this is to attract business because the whole family is going to come along and will have to pay for their own ice cream. Nonetheless, I think it is a great idea even if it is captialism in its fullest. Why? Because it also has this indirect effect of encouraging people to get away from their computers and go out and do something AS a family for once. Spending time together and being social is important today, I think, even if it is "just" going for ice cream. Let's stop being robots, everyone! Put the iPads down, the tablets with Android installed on them, the cellphones, etc. and let's engage in a tradition and be social OFFLINE for once! :)
Anyhow, I am wishing all the moms out there around the world a very Happy Mother's Day. Even if it isn't celebrated today in your country, you deserve it! :)

Here we have also a family meal, but at home.Even that we live in a small town (50 000 people),it´s better to enjoy it at home.My husband cooked,obviously,and I must say,as every Sunday.Noblesse oblige...
I received chocolates, and some plants for the garden. My two sons live in Uruguay.
And greetings from my two daughters, who live abroad, even the one who is living in Finland,send me a nice picture from a Russian fairly tale that I used to read them.

We greet Happy Mother's Day not only to our mother but to everyone we know who has children already. We also greet Happy Mother's Day to single women just to tease but sometimes we are serious in greeting Happy Mother's Day to single women.
Mother's Day is the busiest day of the year for most restaurants in the US. For this reason, I have my mother (and father) come to our house for dinner rather than fight the crowds at the restaurants. Plus, like Shawn suggests, I think it gives us all a more relaxed and intimate visit.

My parents came to this country,and thay had no chance to see again their native land.
