You can use ser when you talk about personalities, occupations or adjetives.

For example: 

Yo soy bueno

Yo soy Ingeniero de Sistemas

Yo soy loco.

 

You can estar when you talk about situations or places.

Estoy sucio

Estoy en el parque

Estoy feliz
