Hi Barbara. I have got this FANTASTIC book called "Breaking Out of Beginner's Spanish" by Joseph J. Keenan that has an entire section on different ways to say hello at work and in other places without offending. It's worth getting the book for that one little section, but it's one of the best books out there. I'd type it out but it's over 3 pages long and the book is seriously worth buying and studying so I thought I'd suggest getting it. 

By the way, after you meet someone for the first time, according to the book, you do not use the word "conocer" again. That's just for the first meeting.

Me parece que ésto no debe ser un problema para usted. Creo que hay muchos temas de que pueden hablar las mujeres (o las chicas). Por ejemplo, podrían hablar de la ropa o la comida. También se pueden intercambiar los opiniones sobre los hombres (-_-|||). De toda manera, lo que más importante es tratar de ser natural y simpática. ¡Deseo que ustedes hagan buenas amigas muy pronto!

Pienso que sería más correcta de esta otra manera:

Una señora de mi trabajo sólo habla en español. ¿Cómo podría expresarme con ella, además del  "¡Hola!, ¿cómo estás?"? ¿Cómo iniciaría/entablaría una conversación con ella haciéndole saber que estoy tratando de aprender español? No quiero ofenderla.

En mi opinión, no creo que haya un esquema predeterminado. Dependerá de lo que cada uno quiera aportar en una conversación con otra persona.

You must also consider whether it is more appropriate to address the "señora" "tu" or "usted".  That depends on a number of factors, including your respective ages.  If the lady is older than you, and in view of the fact that you haven't yet broken the ice with her, perhaps "usted" would be more appropriate.  If in doubt, use "usted".

Puedes decirle lo mismo que le dirias a alguien que habla ingles y que no conoces.
