At the beginning of the course, I was thinking the genre analysis and genre-based approach are small cases, just categorizing the text and distinctive category of discourse of any type, spoken or written according to Swales(1990). Why does the university pay so much attention to open this course for the master students? I believe master students are capable of knowing these basic concepts. At the first few classes, my professor enumerated the genre definition from many angles based on the prestigious scholar and what genre analysis for. Then I learned this subject does not only teach the concepts on the surface but also involves many terms related to the teaching methodology and how to write appropriately in different contexts and at the same time I realized everything existed for persuasive reasons, no one does idle work in this contemporary. The simpler things tend to have more details. Therefore, I holded a curious heart to explore the ocean of genre knowledge and attempt to compensate for my bad writing skills through this course as I’ve always thought writing essays in various contexts is difficult, especially in English. If I only write in my diary, it’s simple. However, once I chose to be a master student in other countries, it was apparent to myself that I needed to be professional when it came to academic writing as an English language master education student , and that there was something I lacked. It needed improving, but it was not a hard fix. Sometimes it is hard for me to understand why some genre analysis needs more detail but others do not. This class has helped me fix that issue a bit, while also strengthening my proficiency in other areas. Throughout the semester, I have completed assignments that have increased my skills, and broadened my sense as a student in different areas. By taking this class, I have been able to develop critical thinking, information literacy and develop effective strategies for analyzing distincted texts.
