hi friends casbah or Kasbah, as "sariel" said is the main fortress and palace in the pre-colonial arabic town "medina" especially in north african islamic architecture. kasbah is a real fortress including buildings for the governor or the king, with his garnision composed of the elite of the army. the idea of the kasbah's position is to defend the medina from its highest topografic place..that the medin's planification itself was made to assume and absorbe the attaking armies within the walls by spreding them into those small streets leading to the center of the town or finishing in a various small places like alveoli bags...so then the intervention of the ganision in the kasbah would be successful to finish up the lost enemies in those streets and the small quarters of the medina (fortified arabic town).. the development of modern artillery made this kind of fortifications useless. thinks
