Why is it three? Doctor Dolittle is going to go to Africa. The doctor said, " I shall only be able to take you three ー with Jip, the dog; Dab-Dab, the duck; Gub-Gub, the pig; and the owl, Too-Too. This is from a novel "The Story Of Doctor Dolittle". I wonder he will take four animals but he says three. Why is it three?

He will take 7 animals. Dr Doolittle is speaking to 3 animals - the crocodile, the monkey and the parrot. He will take those three 'with', or in addition to, the 4 he mentions.

*If he is speaking to three other animals, perhaps he is saying he can take those three in addition to the four he mentions (Jip, the dog; Dab-Dab, the duck; Gub-Gub, the pig; and the owl, Too-Too).*

It could be that he is taking three people, plus the four animals, so that "you three" are coming "with" the dog etc
