hazya, I was on the same boat but I am glad that unlike Vietnamese which I need to understand every single word to be able to understand what a sentence means, with English I need to focus on some key words to understand the whole things. When I started learning English, my friends recommended me to listen to some short convos, then write down what I heard and checked it, back and forth. I gave up on that way very quickly cuz It was so boring and I watched movies which I like instead. I watched it with Vietnamese sub first, tried to write down new words and see how people pronounced words. Cuz it was the first time I watch those movies, so of course I got distracted by contexts. Then I watched them second times with English sub, this time I knew what those movies about already, so i paid more attentions to English. 3rd time I watched it without any subtitle, I guess this time my brain got used to with those movies, so I understood it more quickly. I know my way takes a lot of time and it's kinda boring as well, but it worked because I like those movies, and it's totally okay for me to watch them over and over. I think the best way to do something is doing it with your passion. Just find something which you are interested and then do it in English. Finally, you know how benefit it is to be able to communicate in other languages besides your mother tongue, so learning languages is not an easy thing to do, it takes a lot of time and efforts because it makes you different from other people, so you need to be different from other people by trying harder than them a lot. Best wishes!

This is such a common problem, but only time and practice will help. If you hear of a quick technique, do let me know- I would be very interested as well!

You're not going to like this answer, but the only way is to PRACTICE! You need to spend time with a native speaker, especially with someone patient and helpful (like me). It helps when you immerse yourself in English, and when you're patient with yourself. Start slowly: try listening to children speak, or with a tutor who will take the time to speak slowly and clearly. Learn at your pace: begin to listen to podcasts, or to watch English movies dubbed in your language, before moving on to fast-paced conversation or debate. You'll find that, just like a child that grows faster than they realize, your English comprehension will progress in leaps and bounds as you patiently surround yourself in English culture. Good luck, Brook! I hope to hear from you, soon!

A method that has been helping me a lot recently is taking a short video or a short clip from a video and transcribing as much as I can (in my case, Korean). I'll watch to the clip bit by bit, listen really, really carefully, and write down the words I can pick up. I'll replay the clip as many times as I need to in order to get everything written down. Then I'll have one my iTalki teachers help me double check my work as well as transcribe the rest. This has proven to be really helpful for me, because it makes me pay close attention and listen really carefully to whats being said, rather than just passive listening. Having conversations with native speakers regularly also helps of course, and listening to a LOT of content is extremely important. Also, expand your vocabulary as much as you can, because you'll be able to understand a lot of what you hear if you can identify the vocabulary being used. Hope this helps!
