es waren VS. da waren
What is the difference between 'Es waren einmal drei Männer in Bonn' and 'Da waren einmal drei Männer in Bonn'. They both mean 'there were'?
Yes, both means the same.
"Da waren" seems to be a bit more colloquial to me.
And "Es war einmal" is a common phrase for starting a story or fairytale.
