"He escaped from the battlefield and his armed forces REMAINED useless." You can add a linker to show the cause / result relation (since, because, as a result, because of...) His armed forces remained useless since he escaped from the battlefield. = He escaped from the battlefield and his armed forces remained useless as a result. = His armed forces remained useless because he escaped from the battlefield.
