Things you should know before travelling to Japan

Leaving a tip at restaurants is common in Japan, and staff may be offended if you don’t.   

Slurping your noodles is considered rude and should be avoided.

In Japan, people usually say 'itadakimasu' before eating and 'gochisousama' after finishing a meal.

Public trash cans are rare in Japan, so many locals carry their rubbish with them until they can throw it away at home. 

Bathing in an onsen (hot spring) requires you to wash and rinse your body before entering the shared bath. 

Cash is still widely used in Japan, and many smaller shops may not accept credit cards.

13. In Japan, escalator etiquette is the same in every city: always stand on the left and walk on the right.

In convenience stores (konbini), you can pay bills, ship packages, and even buy concert tickets.

Japanese vending machines are everywhere and sell not only drinks, but also things like hot meals, umbrellas, and even toys. 

Talking while eating is considered rude in Japanese culture, and meals are usually eaten in silence.
