About Me
italki teacher since Dec 4, 2021
Interest topic
My name is Kai and I am obsessed with languages. Since my childhood I spent the majority of my time learning languages and practising pronunciation. Getting more invested in the topic, I have done an internship in the southern part of England and studied in Japan for over a year. In order to keep up my language skills I regularly communicate with native speakers and learn by myself on a daily basis.
At university I underwent stringent language courses that further polished my language skills. As a result, I have passed the English Toefl iBT test and the Japanese JLPT N1 test.
Me as a Teacher
At university I spent a majority of my time doing language exchanges. During these exchanges I paid attention to stay in one language at a time wherever possible. This allows for a higher level of immersion and makes one think in the target language. Improvements in spontaneous interacting are quickly made. I always encourage my students to surround themselves with their target language to a high degree to quicken language acquisition.
During my lessons I like to keep a positive attitude and emphasise that making mistakes is an important part of the learning process.
My lessons & teaching style
I generally start my lessons with a small conversation in the target language to grasp my student's proficiency level and their learning needs. I also make sure to confirm their preferred way of learning, as many types of learners exist.
During the conversation naturally new vocabulary will come up. I add these new words to a list and send them to my student.
Regarding grammar, I like to first explain new concepts in the target language and send summaries if difficulties arise.
To summarise: I prefer a "learning by doing" approach. I like to explain new vocabulary and grammar and confirm my student's understanding by letting them form new sentences on their own.

Thank you so much for the lesson! The conversation lesson gave me some good ideas of what I really wanted to say and what phrases I often use. And he was such a nice patient teacher! The whole lesson was very comfortable :)

Very helpful and interesting, as usual. Kai makes you talk, however difficult it may seem. There's always a lot to discuss, lots of new things to talk and there's never a free second. 😄
