An expat wannabe wanting to teach expats Vietnamese.
italki teacher since Dec 12, 2021
I'm Dennis ( or you can call me Hồng ), a developer based in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I'm full blooded Chinese and growing up I speak Vietnamese, Cantonese and recently English on a daily basis.
The YouTube culture back in the 2010s motivated me to learn English and that has sparked my interest in language learning and also geography. By learning about the lifestyle of expats both inside and outside the country ( through YouTube ) I was eager to interact and help with expats with their language needs.
Me as a Teacher
My teaching style really depends on the theme we discuss throughout the class. From there I’ll mentally curate a glossary that includes repeated words and phrases throughout the lesson.
The topics would be endless, but preferably the topic should be relevant to your current life experiences.
I wouldn’t be teaching nor discussing as much grammar throughout the lesson, because my knowledge base would suffice.
And if you knew that you couldn’t say something, just say it in English and I’ll take a good note of that.
My lessons & teaching style
The lessons will be mostly preparing you for life and work in Vietnam. Or if you live in a huge Vietnamese community overseas.
Tentatively, you'd expect the lesson structure to look like this:
- Asking for directions / Navigation
- Ordering takeouts
- Supermarket shopping
- Bike service
- Renting apartments
- Dealing with paperwork/bureaucracy
- As a FT employee myself I do teach business Vietnamese as well !
Besides, I could provide help with your pronunciation and basic grammar along the way if those are your Achilles heels :)
My classes have a relaxed chill atmosphere as opposed to the atmosphere you'll typically experience in college lectures or corporate meetings.

The teacher has great energy and we converse and develop vocabulary that's related to business-professionalism. Because the teacher is also a white-collar professional, I think he is someone good for engagement, who can understand office politics, clothing, and other topics related to the office.

Having a structured approach is great for beginners but when one studied Vietnamese for a long time, finding that way for additional improvement may not be trouble-free. The teacher has helped me by allowing myself to drive the lessons but also provide feedback and suggested material. His having great English usage (better than many teachers) helps with the lessons especially when it's business-focused. In a way, it feels more like having a business conversational partner which I enjoy. If you're looking for a partner to induce you to drive your learning especially in business, he may be someone you should consider.

I've managed to communicate with the supermarket staff and give directions in Vietnamese thanks to Dennis' "Getting by in Vietnam with basic Vietnamese" course.
When studying the course, you choose the topics and Dennis delivers a tailor-made lesson using authentic materials like Facebook posts and podcasts.
He shares a lot of personal anecdotes to help you understand when and where to use the learnt language.
In addition, he takes the time to ensure that your pronunciation is on point and that the language you learn is authentic to make sure that you'll be understood in the real world.
If you're looking for a Vietnamese course that enables you to succeed in your life in Vietnam, look no further than Dennis' courses.

Dennis is a cool guy and has been very helpful in sharing his advice in improving my Vietnamese skills. He is also very resourceful and very friendly. I have no doubt that this will be a very good learning experience with Dennis.
