Friendly teacher with teaching experience at the University of Cambridge
italki teacher since Mar 18, 2022
I was born and grew up in Tokyo, Japan. I earned my master's degrees from Keio University (Japan) and Glasgow university (UK) in the field of Sociology and Social Anthropology. I completed my PhD in the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Cambridgein 2020, focusing on 'good listeners' in contemporary Japanese society. After working as a Director of Studies and Bye Fellow in Downing College at the University of Cambridge, I currently runs My History (Life story writing company), whilst continuously writing peoples' life stories in various counties. Teaching is one of my life passion that I would like to continue for a long term in a global scale. Thanks!
Me as a Teacher
I have taught Japanese, Japanese society and accademic writing to students at the University of Cambridge and to people privately for more than three years. I am also teaching interviewing and writing life stories for 10 years.
I am a very supportive and patient teacher and I am a good listener. I believe that teaching language is not only offering useful phrases or checking grammatical mistakes, but also giving opportunities to students for immersing themselves into a new culture and for gaining different world views through a new language. So, I listen to my student carefully and ask many questions that they have to think deeply and express themselves with a target language.
My lessons & teaching style
My lessons often focus on conversations (speaking) or/and writing (and reading). In the first session, I will ask my students about their trgets and aims to learn Japanese and we will discuss the best way of learning Japanese for you. I will also ask my students to let me know topics or themes that they want to focus on or they are interested in. My students will have a lot of opportunities to talk or to write about these topics becuase my teaching style is giving them many questions to think and answer during lessons and as homework. I will give my students small notes/lists of new vocabulary that they encounter during lessons.

Nanase has been my main Japanese conversation teacher both online and in-person over last couple of years. She is patient, thoughtful, and tailors the level of Japanese to suit my ability perfectly. She is an experienced teacher, and has hugely improved my confidence, and my ability (I think!)
