About Me

Hello, my name is Gergő (Greg) Garda and I teach Hungarian, English and beginner French. I was born in Satu Mare, Romania into a Hungarian family. I lived most of my life in Ontario, Canada. Currently, I live in Hamilton, Ontario with my wife and two children. I work as a high school teacher teaching religion and philosophy. I enjoy reading, exercising, and cooking. My favorite dish to cook is a Hungarian dish called "somogyi galuska."

Me as a Teacher

My mother tongue is Hungarian; my primary language is English; and I occasionally use French for work and with my children who attend a French Immersion school. My English accent is standard American, and my Hungarian accent is standard. My 13 years of teaching experience has taught me to be patient, creative and engaging as an instructor. My goal is to not overwhelm students, but help them realize that learning a new subject (in this case a new language) is easier than often believed.

My lessons & teaching style

My lessons are centered around learning conversations in particular contexts. The goal is to have my students leave each lesson with the ability to have a basic conversation without memorizing grammar rules. The method that I use to learn new languages is to imagine myself in a particular context and asking myself what phrases, questions, and words I would encounter in that context. The grammar rules including verb conjugations will become self-evident after practicing more and more conversations. Using this method, I learned English, Spanish, and now French. In fact we all learned our mother tongue this way. We were immersed in conversations without ever thinking of grammar rules.
